Welcome Back!

Welcome back! I am so excited to be with those 20 smiling faces every day!

As you know, cold season is upon us. In order to keep staff and students healthy, please remember to stick to these guide lines:

*The most common mistake made is that students are sent back to school when they have been fever free for 24 hours... but that should only be the case if it is 24 hours WITHOUT medicine.

Important Dates:

1/15 - NO SCHOOL

1/17 - Social Studies Homework goes home, it is due 1/18.

1/22 - Counseling with Ms. Aimone

1/24 - Homework Page goes home (subject to be determined), and is due 1/25.

1/26 - Spelling Quiz

1/26 - BINGO Night

What We're Learning:

Phonics: Short and Long i = "i", "i with bossy e", "-igh", and "y that says i"

R-Controlled Vowels = "ar", "are", and "air"

Reading: Poetry

We are learning about the elements of poetry, including: rhythm, rhyme, alliteration, repeated phrases, and mood. We will be reading tons of examples, and finding the different elements in them. Try reading poems at home and talking about them!

Writing: Poetry

Since we are studying poetry in reading, we will also attempt to write our own poems in writing! Students will be challenged to put examples of the elements of poetry in their writings.

Grammar: Complete Sentences & Punctuation

We are practicing making sure our sentences have all of the correct parts, such as a capital letter at the beginning and punctuation at the end. It has been evident that even though students can do this when told, they don't transfer that knowledge over into their independent work. Please be sure to encourage this at home when they are working.

Social Studies: Civil Rights

We will be learning about the civil rights movement and its' important leaders, such as Martin Luther King Jr.

Key Vocabulary: civil rights, compassion, segregation, integration, liberty, and boycott.

Math: Unit 4 - Addition and Subtraction, and Word Problems

We're continuing to strengthen our mental math abilities by practicing adding and subtracting 10's and 100's- the object is to do this quickly, and completely in our heads.

We are also learning how to add 3 and 4 two-digit numbers. These numbers will generally come from story problems, such as:

Johnny has 34 red marbles, 21 blue marbles, 19 green marbles, and 42 purple marbles. How many marbles does he have in all?

Students should recognize that the equation for this is: 34 + 21 + 19 + 42 = ____

It is very important to remember that 2nd graders cannot use the standard algorithm to solve problems. Please re-watch the videos that show our accepted methods:
