What We're Learning:

Phonics: Long and short vowel "a", long and short vowel "o", and the "oo/ui" sound.

Reading: Making Connections in Historical Texts (timelines)

We will be studying historical Creek figures, and other important people, and creating timelines of their lives. For homework on Tuesday, students will being home a sheet of milestones for you to help them add dates to. They will use this to create a timeline in class the next day. Please be sure to help your child with this.

Grammar (ELA): Dictionary Skills

We will be continuing to learn how to use a dictionary for it's many purposes (what a word means, it's part of speech, # of syllables, etc). We will also be practicing ABC Order, since this is an important skill to have to be able to use a dictionary. Please practice putting words in alphabetical order at home, like the spelling words!

Writing: Informational Writing Students have been writing non-fiction books about topics they are experts in. We are learning to divide our writing into pages of different types if information, for example a piece of animal writing could be organized as a page for appearance, a page for habitat facts, and a page about their diet. We are also learning how to hook our reader with a question, sound, exclamation, or other attention grabbing method.

Social Studies: PBL Projects- Creek Indians and Artifacts

Students will discover the different types of projects they will be able to create in order to answer our question: "How do we, as historical preservationists, justify the importance of the Creek artifacts being preserved?"

They will choose to work either in a pair or independently on these projects, and they will be our main focus for the next 3.5 weeks! Again, during this time it is vital that your child is present at school. Their success is greatly matched with attendance. Remember, you will be invited to see their project presentations on November 16th! A "Save the Date" will be sent home next week with more details.

Math: Coins, Bills, and Addition Strategies

This week we will focus on identifying, and counting mixed groups of coins. Students will also need to be able to count groups of bills. Please practice this at home as much as you can. Students are supposed to come to 2nd grade knowing the amounts each coin is worth, but we often find that they need refreshing on this.

Students will need to be able to answer and solve problems such as:

Jack has 3 dimes and 4 nickles. Jill has 2 dimes and 5 pennies. How much money does each person have? Who has more money?

Please continue to practice the addition strategies at home as well. I suggest you preview the subtraction video and begin practicing that at home with your child if you believe they are ready!

We are almost midway through this unit, and will be announcing a test date as soon as we know it.
