What We're Learning & What You Can Do:
Health:
Our word of the Month, and focus is "kindness". Students are earning Wildcat Dollars when they go above and beyond to show kindness. We are also learning about being Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to Learn- and what that looks like in different areas and times of the day at school.
Phonics: Long and Short "O"
Our Quiz on the 29th will include 5 words per sort. The list was distributed on 9/14 with optional activities, and we have been working on these words & their patterns in class every week.
Reading: Using Illustrations to Understand Setting
We will be studying how illustrations add to the development and undersetting of a story's setting. Students will be asked to make inferences about a story based on the illustrations, such as "what do you think that characters could be in this type of setting?" or "what do you infer the mood of this story is, since it's setting is a deep, dark forest?"
Grammar: Irregular Plurals
These are those tricky plurals such as "mouse --> mice", "tooth --> teeth", "fish --> fish"
Find and discuss other examples at home! (person/people, man/men, deer/deer)
IXL Practice: 2nd grade E.3, F.1, and F.2
Writing: Revising and Editing Our Small Moments
Students have been working on writing Narrative Small Moments for about a month and a half now. Our focus is moving from adding details/zooming in to Revising with Intent. Students will be asked to look over old booklets and revise them, aka make them better. We want to encourage students that writing is a process, and writers can improve their writing by adding to it, or fixing mistakes. This week students will write a piece that will be graded with a rubric for a classwork grade. Our hope is to see them applying all of the things we have learned about Small Moment writing so far. Eventually, students will write a final piece that is graded on a full rubric, where they will be asked to show their craft and understanding of Narrative Writing for a quiz grade. Please encourage your child to write at home!
Science: Matter and it's Changes + Test Review
We will learn about measuring matter (volume, mass, and length), and how it can change: dissolve, melt, freeze, condense, etc. Please discuss these concepts at home to reinforce the vocabulary. You can talk about this in the kitchen and at dinner- there are many examples to be seen!
The study guides will go home on Wednesday the 27th. Please use them to review and study. Your child also has the option of taking home their text book, since they are checked out to them for the year. It must come back daily if you choose for your child to bring it home.
Math: Data + Test Review
As we near the test, we will be reviewing the unit, and working on reading and answering questions about data on a bar or pictograph. Students should continue to practice the different number forms, comparing numbers, ordering numbers, and skip counting word problems at home.
Another great skill to practice would be giving your child a list of numbers and asking: "Which is more than _____ but less than _____?" This forces them to really apply their knowledge of greater than and less than.
Please continue to use the Math Journals to study. 2nd grade works hard to provide pages in the notebooks that mirror the vocabulary and layout of the test questions. You can use all of the pages to "rewrite" questions for your child. Simply change names, numbers, and other small details. We encourage the use of journals as the main study tool. IXL can be an additional supplement, but remember it is not modeled like the Unit Test.
IXL Practice: 2nd grade M.1, M.2, M.4, M.5, M.8, A.7, M.6, M.11, C.2, C.4, M.14, B.2, B.4, and R.2
Thank you for all you do to support your child's learning. As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns.
Fondly,
Mrs. Crisp
