Reminders:
--- Please be mindful of your conference time. SignUp Genius should send you a 2-day prior reminder. --- Our Monthly homework Board went home 9/14 along with the Spelling Word Sheet. Remember, your child must read 20 minutes a night, and they have the duration of the month to complete the allotted amount of activities on the Choice Board. Refer to the top for the due date and amount of choice that must be completed.
--- Graded papers will go home every 2-3 Thursdays. These top sheet must be signed, and ALL papers must be returned for my records.
--- Be sure to sign the VIP envelopes that go home on Thursday, and return the envelope. Envelopes must be returned for you to get the next weeks' papers.
--- Please empty your child's binder pocket NIGHTLY. Check for anything that needs to be signed, and please return documents ASAP. This is also an important step in keeping up with what your child is learning, because we will send home weekly activities that were not for a grade. These activities will give good insight on what 2nd graders are learning!
Important Dates:
9/15 - Picture Day! Forms went home in VIPs a few weeks ago.
9/19 - Grammar Homework goes home (due 9/20)
9/29 - Spelling Quiz (Sheet with all of the words went home 9/14)
9/28 - Math Unit 1 Test
10/4 - Science Test (Matter and its Changes)
What We're Learning:
Phonics: Long/Short Vowel "i"
Reading: Story Elements
Story Elements covers the characters, setting, problem, and solution. This is where students also need to be able to describe the "beginning, middle, and end" of a story. Please discuss this at home with them during their 20 minutes of reading! Still continue to ask the 5Ws & H when reading as well!
Grammar: Adjectives & Adverbs
Adjectives are describing words. Students will need to be able to identify and use adjectives correctly. At home, choose objects for your child to describe using adjectives. (color, size, texture, smells, etc)
Adverbs describe verbs, and they often end in "ly". When out and about, students can describe what they see using adverbs and adjectives.
For example: Mom pushes the noisy cart quickly down the grocery aisle.
"Noisy" is the adjective, and "quickly" is the adverb.
Students will need to be able to tell an adjective from an adverb, and be able to use both correctly in context.
IXL Practice: Adverbs: Q.1 - Q.9, W.1, and W.2.
Adjectives: T.1, T.2, T.3, and T.4
Writing: Narrative Small Moments
Students will continue their Narrative Writing unit for the next 3-4 weeks. This is where they will write their own true, personal stories. Please support this at home by having your child write about something they did in school, or at a friend's house, or over the weekend! Simply having students write at home builds their stamina, and encourages them to tell their stories. We've specifically been learning how to "Zoom In" on stories, and add in feelings, talking, thinking, or step by step actions.
Science: Matter
We are studying the 3 States of Matter, and how they change. Students will need to understand the differences in Solids, Liquids, and Gases, and be able to tell the properties of each. Eventually we will move on to melting, freezing, dissolving, and other changes. It is vital that students understand that everything is made of matter, and all matter has mass. They also must understand how we measure each type's mass- weight, length, volume, etc.
Math: Unit 1 Base Ten Knowledge
We are moving on from understanding the different forms of writing numbers, and the difference between "place" and "value". So, please continue to review "picture form, word form, expanded form, and standard form" at home. Skip counting is also an important skill to keep up with, especially in the hundreds (forwards and backwards).
We are going to be focusing on words problems, and comparing/ordering numbers. This involves greater than, less than, and equal to reviews.
Some types of problems you could practice involve skip counting word problems, such as:
"Dad buys 8 boxes of doughnuts. Each box has 5 doughnuts in it. How many doughnuts are there in all?"
Our first test will be September 26th. To study, your child will begin bringing home their math journal daily. However, they MUST BE RETURNED DAILY! We will be added items in it almost daily. Please, please, be sure that the journals are out back in your child's back pack each night, and I will make sure they go home each day.
Some IXL practices include: M.1, M.2, M.4, M.5, M.8, A.7, M.6, M.11, B.2, B.3, B.4, and R.2.
Thank you for all that you do,
Mrs. Crisp
P.S. Our August Student of the Month (SOTM) will be announced this week! Tell your kiddos!
