Hi everyone! Welcome to our first blog post! Here you will find all important dates and info about what's going on in second grade for the next few weeks.
Reminders:
--- Please empty your child's binder pocket NIGHTLY. Check for anything that needs to be signed, and please return documents ASAP. This is also an important step in keeping up with what your child is learning, because we will send home weekly activities that were not for a grade. These activities will give good insight on what 2nd graders are learning! --- Be sure to sign the VIP envelopes that go home on Thursday, and return the envelope. Envelopes must be returned for you to get the next weeks' papers.
--- A conference Sign Up Genius will be sent sometime this week, be on the lookout.
Important Dates:
8/30: Math homework goes home, as always, it is due the next day (31st).
8/31: Community Night (No Homework!)
9/4 and 9/5: No School for students!
September will be the start of our monthly homework and spelling words!
9/6: Science Homework on Matter
What We're Learning:
Phonics: Digraphs (wh, ch, th, sh) and Long/Short Vowel "A"
Reading: 5 W's and H- Understanding Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How in a story
At home, when your child reads their 20 minutes a night, discuss the 5 W's and H. Remember, the 20 minutes of reading can be done in several ways: your child reading, you both reading (they read a page, you read a page, etc), or even you reading to them. Reading to your child is still very important, as they can learn from hearing your expression, voices, and fluency.
We will move on to Story Elements for 2 weeks afterwards- which covers the characters, setting, problem, and solution. This is where students also need to be able to describe the "beginning, middle, and end" of a story. Please discuss this at home with them during their 20 minutes of reading!
Grammar: Collective Nouns & Adjectives
Collective Nouns are things like "a pride of lions", "a swarm of bees", and "a pack of wolves". Try to discover other collective nouns together, and point them out when you see them.
Adjectives are describing words. Students will need to be able to identify and use adjectives correctly. At home, choose objects for your child to describe using adjectives. (color, size, texture, smells, etc)
Writing: Narrative Small Moments
Students will continue their Narrative Writing unit for the next 4-5 weeks. This is where they will write their own true, personal stories. You can support this at home by having your child write about something they did in school, or at a friend's house, or while visiting Grandma! Simply having students write at home builds their stamina, and encourages them to tell their stories.
Social Studies: Landforms and GA Regions
We are learning to identify and define different landforms (mountain, valley, plateau, etc) and the Five Georgia Regions. It is expected that students be able to describe, and compare and contrast the Georgia Regions. Please go over their homework with them, as you will see information on those sheets that will help you guide their studying. You will find that MANY landforms and Regions activities went home with your child on Friday- please look over these with them.
(starting Sept.) Science: Matter
Our first science unit will begin in September, and it is on the 3 States of Matter, and how they change. Students will need to understand the differences in Solids, Liquids, and Gases, and be able to tell the properties of each. Eventually we will move on to melting, freezing, dissolving, and other changes.
Math: Unit 1 Base Ten Knowledge
Our focus the next two weeks in this unit will be understanding the different forms of writing numbers, and the difference between "place" and "value".
For example, in the number 437, the '3' is the the tens place, and it's value is 30.
The different forms we cover are "standard form", "word form", "picture form", and "expanded form". You will see these on the August 30th math homework!

--- For IXL Math practice, feel free to check out the following 2nd grade activities: M.1, M.2, M.4, M.5, M.8, A.7, M.6, M.11, B.2, B.3, and B.4. Also, please see the parent letter sent at the beginning of the unit for specifics and ideas.
Thank you for all that you do,
Mrs. Crisp
