Important Dates:
3/23: Math Unit 4 Test, PBIS Assembly, and Community Night
3/24: STEAM DAY (I will be out, so please send any changes of transportation/important info to the front desk.)
What are we learning?
Reading- We are starting our Flat Stanley unit! We will all be reading the first Flat Stanley book, and learning about character development, point of view, and story elements. During this book, we will practice using the RACE strategy to answer comprehension questions. As stated before, this will now be the expectations for students. They must start sentences with a capital letter, end with punctuation, and use RACE.
For example, students would answer the following question these possible ways:
Q- Where did John find his missing jacket?
A- 1) John found his missing jacket in the lost and found according to page 21.
2) The author stated on page 21 that John found his missing jacket in the lost and found.
3) John found his missing jacket in the lost and found. (page 21)
Every RACE answer is worth 5 points 1 for each of the following: starts with a capital letter, restating the question, answering the question, citing the evidence (page or paragraph #), and ending with punctuation.
Please support this at home by asking your child questions about what they are reading, and have them write their answer using the RACE strategy.
Phonics: "oo" sound- How can it sound different? (like in "balloon" and "hook")
Writing: Continuing writing Informational Books- students are learning how to "beef up" their books by teaching more, and how to edit them. You can see the anchor chart we created in the photo above. Students should try writing at home!
Math: Reviewing and prepping for the Unit 4 Post Test- please use the math journals to study by changing the names/numbers in the problems and having students resolve. You can mirror these problems by changing the scenarios or having them resolve using a different method. Our test is Thursday, March 23rd.
Grammar: We will be looking at "Formal vs Informal Language". This means we will recognize the difference between speaking with friends/siblings, and speaking to someone like your principal, boss, coach, etc.
EXAMPLE: "Hey dude, let's chill!" = informal language
"Maria, would you be interested in coming over for dinner tonight?" = formal language
Social Studies: Learning about the life and accomplishments/impact of Martin Luther King Jr.
If you have any questions, please let me know!
Thank you for ll that you do,
Mrs. Crisp
