What are we learning?
Reading: This week we are working on our reading comprehension. We will be reading leveled texts, and doing several comprehension activities with them, such as answering questions, using the vocabulary in our own way, and writing about what we read. Then next week we will begin one of my favorite units- Folktales and Fables!
Writing: Small Moments
We are continuing our Narrative/Small Moments unit by working on our leads. We will begin our conclusion work in the next week as well.
Math: Unit 2
Please be sure to keep and refer to the Unit 2 Parent Letter that went home Monday the 3rd. This unit will focus on addition and subtraction strategies, word problems, and money. During this unit, your support is extremely important. As a second grade team, and as a school from grades K-2, it is understood that students are not ready to solve problems using the standard algorithm- in other words, the stacking and crossing out method shown below. Please do NOT teach this to your child and have them solve like this at home. Developmentally, students do not understand why/how the algorithm works, making it mindless steps vs true understanding. We teach students how to solve using pictures, number line, and expanded form. The following links are to 2 videos that 2nd grade created personally for our students and parents. Please save the links, and refer to them as often as needed to help your child! Again, your support is very important during this unit, and I thank you in advance!

Grammar: We will be learning how to properly use reflexive pronouns next week, and then moving onto collective nouns.
Reflexive Pronoun examples: myself, himself, ourselves...
Collective Noun examples: pride of lions, colony of ants, litter of kittens...
Science: After the stars test, we will move into our sun and moon unit. In it we will cover: rotate vs revolve, what causes day and night, seasons, shadows, and phases of the moon.
Health: Our second step lessons over the next few weeks are all about "Self Talk"- the goal is for students to understand different kinds of self talk, and be able to use it themselves when needed.
Thank you for everything you do!
