Hello all! I'm glad you're checking out the first blog post of the year!
Every 2 weeks (approximately) I will create a post that highlights important dates, reminders, and our subject focuses for the week. I'll send a dojo broadcast letting you know there's been an update, and to check it out!
Monthly homework starts this week! The second grade team is very excited to begin this "unhomework" journey.
Your child will bring home a READO (like BINGO) choice board of reading activities, and a Whole Child Choice Board of citizenship building homework. As stated, this is monthly homework, so it should be kept in the sheet protector provided to stay safe! It will be due on the last school day of the month, as a grade.
They will also bring home the monthly spelling list- which is not considered homework. They are not to turn anything in for this, but to practice with you as you see fit. Remember, there will be a spelling quiz on 20 words total from the monthly list (the date of this quiz is on the sheet they will bring home).
STAR math and reading tests begin school-wide next week. Just a reminder, these tests have zero affect on grades or class placement. The scores are purely for teachers to monitor growth.
SUBJECT FOCUSES:
Reading- We will be continuing to learn our Daily 5 routines and procedures. We will also study story structure, which means understanding the importance of the beginning, middle, and end in a story.
Writing- Our main focus is still building up our writing stamina, and learning how to focus on writing a piece for 20-40 minutes without giving up! The first writing unit is all about "small moments"- so we will write many narrative pieces about small moments in our lives. Some examples are a special fishing trip, riding a roller coaster, cooking a meal with grandma, etc.
Grammar- We will focus on learning how to use correct punctuation at the end of every sentence, and that all sentences start with a capital letter.
Math- Our first unit is all about understanding place value. This week we will focus on skip counting by 5's, 10's, and 100's (forward and backwards). A parent letter will go home that goes into great detail the expectations and goals of this unit. Please hold onto the letter to reference throughout the unit!
Social Studies- The first social studies unit is all about the 5 Georgia regions. This week we will study and learn about the different types of landforms, and the unique characteristics of each GA region.
THANK YOU FOR CHECKING IN! As always, I'm just a message away!
