Is It May Already?!

Hello everyone! I can't believe it's already the last month of school!
Here's what's going on next week:
-- On Wednesday, we have the opportunity to meet and listen to a presentation by doctor called, "A Day in the Life of a Doctor".
-- STAR math and reading tests begin school-wide next week. Just a reminder, these tests have zero affect on grades or placement. The scores are purely for teachers to monitor growth.
-- Mrs. Senne will teach us more about coding in the computer lab!
SCIENCE:
We will have our Life Cycles test this Friday, the 6th. Students will bring home a study guide on Monday for your use at home. (it will look different from others, as it does not have questions for students, just key information)
The test will focus mostly on vocabulary, and the stages of different life cycles.
READING:
Our focus will be on asking and answering questions while reading to strengthen our comprehension.
Mrs. Steioff and I will also be meeting with students individually this week and next to find their new reading levels! This is a very exciting time for the kids, because they have worked so hard and seeing their reading level go up gives them such a sense of accomplishment. Our hope is that everyone has jumped one level! :)
WRITING/GRAMMAR:
We will spend the whole week writing (and hopefully receiving) friendly letters! Our focus will be on understand the parts of a letter, their order and placement, and the correct use of commas in a letter.
MATH:
GROUP 1- Continuing unit 6, focusing on repeated addition. Students will continue learning about even and odd, equal groups, and how arrays can be written as repeated addition sentences. One vital detail about repeated addition sentences is that they MUST match horizontally to the array. I personally teach the students that it's just like reading- follow with your eyes left to right, NOT up and down.
For example, the below picture would be:
3 + 3 = 6 ...... NOT 2 + 2 + 2 = 6.

GROUP 2- Continuing unit 3, focusing on area. Students will begin learning about area and the different ways to find it, including multiplying length x width, or counting the square units inside. It is important that students always use the 'squared' unit term, so please reinforce this at home.
THE WEEK AFTER:
Both groups will have their Math tests on Thursday, May 12th. Although this is Field Day, those activities do not begin until after 9:00 am. As a team, we decided it would be more beneficial for our students to take the test that Thursday before Field Day, so they would still have the opportunity to study on Wednesday night. Otherwise, the test would have to be Wednesday. This also will allow for a calm and focused morning, before the Field Day activities begin.
More details about Field Day will be coming to you closer to the 12th!
THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO!
