I hope everyone is enjoying their long weekend! Here are a few things to look forward to...

Our class won a popsicle party during Book Fit, so we will have those one day this week during recess! (I'm shooting for the warmest day)

Social Studies: We are finishing up our unit on the Creeks, Cherokees, & Sequoyah. Students completed and brought home study guides on Thursday. They are also welcome to bring home their text books any time, since they are checked out to them. We will have our test on Friday the 19th.

Reading: For the past week, and next week, we have been studying how characters respond to events (or problems) in stories. This skill is a small part of the big picture of reading comprehension. To help with your child's reading comprehension, you can ask questions during and after reading such as:

-What is the main idea?

-What does the character want? How will he/she get it?

-Why do you think the author wrote this text?

-Does this story remind you of another you've heard?

-What character traits do the characters have?

Writing: Our informational unit is well underway! We have nearly completed a Penguin Research project, and students will begin a new research project on a "wild cat" next week. They will research the animals' appearance, habitat, diet, and fun facts, and use this information to create a nonfiction book. Exposing your child to nonfiction texts & videos, and asking them to find facts for you can be a fun way to touch on this skill at home.

Grammar: We will soon be studying compound words. Challenging your child to find these when you're out & about is a great segway into our learning!

Math: (as always, check the 2nd grade website for resources!)

GROUP 1: Continuing Unit 4- We are a little over midway into this unit. This week we are focusing on subtraction methods and practice. Please refer to the previously sent out videos for 2nd grade strategies. Word problems are also a huge part of this unit, so any practice at home with those are beneficial.

GROUP 2: Continuing Unit 1 of 3rd grade- we will revisit rounding this week, and continue working on word problems, and 3 digit addition/subtraction. Feel free to rewatch the previously sent out videos for problem solving strategies, as they are the methods we have taught, and encourage students to use.
