Back At It!

Last week, we all worked super hard and kept our minds and bodies healthy! This week we're back at it. Here's what you need to know:

Science: We will continue our space unit by talking about shadows, and seasons. We will also finally begin using our planting boxes that are in the courtyard! 2nd grade is lucky enough to have class planters boxes, and our class will be planting carrots and spinach!

Reading: This week we begin Folktales. We will be focusing on fables, stories with animals that have a moral. If there are in from your culture, please share them with your child! This is a super fun unit, and it is always awesome to hear other cultures' stories.

Writing/Grammar: Continuing work on narrative writing ("Small Moments"). This is often a very difficult writing unit, so if you practice at home- remind your child to have a strong lead, stay on ONE moment, give details, and end with an emotion/feeling. Often students try to write about a whole day, but we try to teach them to zoom in on one moment: making cookies with mom, picking out the perfect toy at Toys R Us, fishing with dad, etc.

We will introduce possessives for grammar how to write and use them. Practice this by searching for it around you, like "Wendy's" and "Macy's"!

Math: ALL PARENTS- Please copy this link into your browswer & watch this video with your child!

Group 1: Continue practicing addition without regrouping, we will be doing some regrouping this week, so you can slowly start practicing that at home. Please remember that the algorithm is NOT allowed in second grade. Students must use the methods we've taught. Please use the video for reference. You can also practice counting coins at home, as that is a skill we are always trying to touch on.

Group2: We are studying polygons, and then we will move onto rows and columns. Learning about rows and columns, and "partitioning" sets the stage for learning multiplpication and division in the near future.
