What We're Learning:

Reading: Main Idea and Details

We will focus on finding and identifying the main idea of nonfiction books. Students will learn how to also give the main idea of a paragraph, or a chapter of a longer text. As you read at home, be sure to discuss the main idea of the book, page, or paragraph.

Grammar: Compound Words

We will learn that compound words are 2 words put together to make a new word. It is important that students understand that the new word does NOT have a space, and has a new meaning. They will practice making compound words, and knowing where to "break" them into their 2 different parts. Practice finding examples when you're out and about! Like at the playground or supermarket! Ha- see what I did there? :)

Writing: Opinion

Students will write about their opinions and must learn how to support their opinion with multiple strong reasons. For example: My opinion is that playing outside is better than playing inside. A strong reason to go with that is that it helps keep you healthy by being active outside. A weak reason would be that "it is fun". (this would not be an acceptable reason)

Students will write book reviews as well, to share their opinions on what they're reading.

Social Studies: Juliette Gordon Lowe

We will be studying Juliette Gordon Lowe and her character traits and contributions to Georgia and the United States. Read books or articles about her, or watch videos together. She's one of our Georgia Heroes.

Math: Unit 5 Geometry and Fractions

We will briefly review polygons and their attributes, and then move into fractions.

Students will need to learn to partition shapes into EQUAL shares, such as halves, thirds, and fourths. It is important that students practice this at home to get the hang of making their fractions equal. Please also work on writing fractions as numbers and as words. Refer to the Unit 5 parent letter for more information.

PBIS Word of the Month: Concerned Citizens

Students will be rewarded with Wild Cat Dollars for intervening or being proactive about problems or issues they see (such as cleaning up an unattended mess, or helping someone in need without being asked).

We Need:

Emergency Snacks! Chips, granola bars, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for all you do,

Mrs. Crisp
