What We're Learning:

Phonics: *New Lists go home Monday!* R-Controlled Vowels

Reading: Author's Purpose & Main Idea

Students will learn how to identify if an author's purpose for writing was to Persuade, Inform, or Entertain. This is commonly known as "PIE". We will also practice reading passages and deciding what the author's main idea is.

Writing: Poetry

We are continuing to write our own poems! Students will be challenged to put examples of the elements of poetry in their writings. They are encouraged to use sensory words, and experiment with line breaks. You can help encourage this at home by co-writing poems!

Grammar: Possessives ('s)

We will be practicing using the apostrophe-s to show possessives in our sentences, such as: Mrs. Crisp's dog is cute!

Social Studies: Civil Rights

We've learning about the civil rights movement and its' important leaders, such as Martin Luther King Jr. Our focus is now moving to Jackie Robinson. We will complete a study guide in class on Thursday and Friday for your child to use to prepare for the test. It is planned for Thursday, Feb. 8th.

Key Vocabulary: civil rights, compassion, segregation, integration, liberty, and boycott.

Math: Unit 4 - Properties of Addition, Balancing Equations, 3 Digit Subtraction

With the amount of days we have missed, it is again vital that you practice math skills with your child at home. This unit test is admittedly tough, but with your help students will be successful! We will spend this week learning about the Properties of Addition (identity property, associative property, and commutative property).

We will also practice balancing equations, such as:

4 + 5 + 3 = __ + 4 To balance the equation students could use an 8, or 5 + 3.

Something that is very challenging coming down the line are guess and check problems- For example, students may see a data chart of 5 numbers and have to pick out what 3 numbers together make exactly 148. This is something you could easily get a head start practicing at home!

As always, it is very important to remember that 2nd graders cannot use the standard algorithm to solve problems. Please re-watch the videos that show our accepted methods:
